Senior Session at the Factory at Franklin

When it comes to capturing senior portraits, finding the right location is key. I was thrilled to return to The Factory at Franklin for this session after not having shot there in a while. I’m happy to report that the new owners still allow photography with a paid permit, which is great news because The Factory remains one of my favorite spots for its endless variety of stunning backdrops and unique charm.

We began the session at Studio TN, to celebrate this senior’s love of the theater. The theater provided a meaningful and personal setting that beautifully reflected his passion for performing. The dramatic lighting and intimate atmosphere made it a fantastic place to start, and it set the tone for a creative and fun shoot.

Next, we headed to the colorful and eclectic shops within The Factory. A big thank-you to Luna Record Shop and CR-71 for letting us take photos in their stores. These spaces were a perfect fit for this senior’s personality. Whether posing among the vinyl records or exploring the treasures at CR-71, these indoor locations added such a unique and personalized touch to the session.

We wrapped up the session with The Factory’s gorgeous outdoor spaces, which I have always loved. The industrial brick walls, large glass panels, and beautiful architectural details provided a classic and timeless backdrop. I think the overcast day added a depth and contrast to the photos that is just beautiful.

What makes The Factory at Franklin so special is its versatility. From its creative indoor locations to the stunning outdoor settings, it’s a photographer’s dream. Every corner offers something unique, and it’s the kind of location that helps bring a senior’s personality to life in every shot.

This session was a wonderful mix of creativity, fun, and meaningful moments. Huge thanks again to Studio TN, Luna Record Shop, and CR-71 for being part of this incredible experience!

A Gorgeous Senior Session with a Touch of Fall and a Special Guest at Bowie Nature Preserve

I absolutely love when I get to work with repeat clients! It was such a pleasure to capture this beautiful senior’s session at Bowie Nature Preserve, especially since I had photographed her older brother’s senior portraits a few years ago. One of the best surprises was seeing their family dog, Ryder, again—just like during her brother’s session! Ryder is so photogenic and fun to photograph. Also, I love that he came with wardrobe changes. I especially love his University of Alabama collar.

This was my first time shooting at Bowie Park during golden hour. I’ve done sessions here before but usually during the day for families with little ones who prefer avoiding evening crankiness. Bowie Park is always a great location thanks to the ample shade that makes shooting in daytime lighting easier, but I was excited to see just how magical it could be at sunset. The park did not disappoint! The soft glow through the trees and the warm, subtle hues of fall just starting to appear were simply breathtaking.

This senior did a fantastic job and I so enjoyed getting to know her. I especially loved the colorful jacket she wore for the last part of the shoot—it was a perfect complement to the fall tones beginning to peek through the trees. The jacket had all my favorite shades for autumn and really tied everything together beautifully.

I’m thrilled with how these photos turned out and can’t wait to share more from this lovely evening in Bowie. Senior sessions like this—where everything comes together so effortlessly—remind me why I love what I do.

Chasing Light at a Senior Portrait Session in Franklin TN

I just love how this senior session turned out! We started at the creek, where the weather was absolutely perfect for August—breezy and not too hot. Later, we headed over to Eastern Flank Battlefield in Franklin, which offered a stunning backdrop as the sun dipped lower in the sky.

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is how it pushes you to truly appreciate light. We, natural light photographers, often refer to ourselves as light chasers. But no matter how carefully we plan our sessions around the magic hour, we’re still at the mercy of what nature gives us. When the sun plays along just right, it’s such an exciting experience!

And speaking of perfect light, this senior absolutely nailed her session. It was such a joy getting to know her and capturing these beautiful moments.

Since he attends Franklin High School, downtown Franklin, his stomping grounds, was the perfect backdrop for his senior photos. I recently had the pleasure of photographing a senior guy session at Pinkerton Park, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. This location was a fantastic choice for senior photos. For me, the most important elements of a photo session location are good lighting and variety, and this location has both. Plus, it’s great to have some updated examples of this location for future clients to reference.

I think what a photographer sees when considering a portrait session location is different from what other people see, so I thought I would outline what I like about this location and the kind of things I’m looking for in great portrait spots.

Simple Greenery with Sun Coming Through The Trees

Lighting is one of my favorite elements in a session location, and I’m always looking for places where the sun is shining through the trees. There are several of these spots at Pinkerton. The first is just the entrance to a trail. It’s simple and probably nothing you would think of as particularly interesting, but I love the way the light comes through at this time of day. A little ways up the trail is another area with tall weeds that are fun to shoot through, creating texture and variety, again with lovely light coming through the trees. This area is pretty shaded, which is important for the early part of a session while the sun is still higher in the sky. We don’t want harsh lighting for the portraits, so I look for shaded areas in the beginning.

Graffiti Overpass by the Creek

One of my favorite spots at Pinkerton Park is the area near the creek, where the overpass is covered in vibrant graffiti. This setting is particularly fun for senior sessions, adding a touch of grunge to the photos. Standing just at the edge of the overpass gives some really nice lighting. Inside the underpass, the lighting is more challenging, but it’s worth it to capture some of the graffiti and the structure itself. Again, this is not a place you’d consider beautiful by any means. And I will also admit that I have to edit out some less-than-desirable graffiti. Down by the creek, the lighting is better and there is more fun graffiti. I also like the texture the rocks add in that spot.

Natural Beauty in the Trees

For these first photos, I just had my senior sit on a stool off the path because I liked the lighting. These are super simple with just greenery for the backdrop, but it makes the senior the focus, which is really what I like. There is another shaded area at the back of the park with some nice trees, and an area where the light coming through the trees makes a kind of arch for a little bit of natural framing.

Perfect Lighting on the Bridge

The bridge at Pinkerton Park is another fantastic spot, especially as the sun begins to set. I like to end sessions on the bridge as the sun is going down. Earlier, the lighting would have been too harsh here, but by the end of the session, it’s perfect. I also like to get shots on the ground with the bridge in the background, as well as a few fun shots shooting down at my subject while I’m up on the bridge.

Final Thoughts

Pinkerton Park proved to be an excellent choice for this senior guy session, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty with some fun structures. From the graffiti-covered overpass to the sunlit trees and beautiful bridge, each setting provided a unique backdrop that highlighted different aspects of the senior’s personality. I’m thrilled with how the photos turned out and excited to share them with him and his family.

Capturing Sunshine and Adventure: A Senior Girl Session at South 40 Farms

This week, I had the pleasure of photographing a senior portrait session at South 40 Farms. It was the first time I had shot at the farm this early in the year, and I loved it just as much as I did in the fall. I admittedly have always loved photographing in the weeds just as much as in a field of flowers, and this session is a perfect example of that.

We encountered some unexpected challenges with the creek due to recent rains, which left what was usually a large dry rock area in the creek, almost completely covered with water. The creek photos were very important to this senior, so she didn’t let the high water deter her, but braved the mud and the water.

After that, I found this little patch of weeds that had the sun shining through them in the most lovely way. The texture created by the stalks along with the hazy sunlight is lovely. Nearby, there was a gorgeous dogwood, which I love. I wish the flowers lasted longer because they photograph beautifully.

I think my favorite photos of the session are of her standing in the tall weeds. So gorgeous.

I ended the session at the pond, which I hadn’t shot at before because there are so many options at South 40 that it’s impossible to get to them all in one session.

This session had me thinking again about how much I enjoy Senior sessions. When I first started shooting professionally almost 10 years ago, I was much more comfortable photographing little kids, and wasn’t so sure about Seniors. But now they are some of my favorite sessions. I love being able to capture their individual personalities, and also being able to play around with light more than I am able to with younger kids or family groups.

Weathering the Storm: A Senior Session at Harlinsdale Farms

Today, I want to share the story of a recent senior session that took place amidst some less-than-ideal weather conditions at Harlinsdale Farms in Franklin, TN. Despite facing several setbacks due to Mother Nature’s whims, I really love how this session turned out.

Scheduling this session was no easy feat. We had to reschedule multiple times due to the unpredictable weather, and just when we thought we had a clear window, the forecast decided to throw us a curveball.

On the day of the shoot, the weather was far from perfect. Occasional sprinkles and persistent gusts of wind threatened to disrupt our plans at every turn. But rather than letting it dampen our spirits, we embraced the challenge head-on. The one positive is that it was unseasonably warm for a February day.

One thing I’ve learned in my years as a photographer is to find beauty in unexpected places. High winds may have been a nuisance, but it added a certain dynamic quality to the portraits that we couldn’t have achieved otherwise. I happen to love photographing windblown hair, so it was more the constant threat of a downpour that had me concerned. Luckily, the rain held out for the most part.

Now, let’s talk about our senior girl. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, she did an amazing job. I LOVED the green color she chose for both her outfits. The color was absolutely perfect one her, and I also love the way it looked with the backdrop of Harlinsdale Farms. She was so much fun to hang out with and photograph.

In the end, despite the weather’s best efforts to thwart us, we managed to capture some great Senior photos. It just goes to show that sometimes, the most memorable moments come when we least expect them – even if they’re sprinkled with a little rain and a lot of wind.

I’m getting a little teary-eyed with this one.

This beautiful family was one of my very first supporters in my foray into photography. They were my subjects when I had zero idea what I was doing, but just knew that I enjoyed capturing families in photos and wanted to learn more.

I found this photo from 11 years ago. It was taken when I was the MOMS club amateur photographer and we used to joke about how I would someday shoot senior photos for these kids…and that felt like a million years away.

But that million years went by SO QUICKLY. And now here we are. I have to figure out when to shoot photos of my own senior.

I had been eyeing South 40 Farm for quite some time as a location for sessions but had never been. But when I found out what this Senior was looking for in her photos, I knew it would be a great fit. Plus, it’s so much better for me to shoot at a brand new location with a family I’ve known forever, and who trusts me to recommend a session without having seen photos of other sessions there.

Now I wish I had gone earlier, because I’m in love with this location. I didn’t even get to all the spots I wanted to shoot.

Skate Boarder Senior pics at Pinkerton Park

O.K. y’all need to let me know when I’m missing out on good portrait session locations. I’ve shot photos many times at Pinkerton Park in Franklin but have never been out by the river. I have no idea why not. I guess I just thought it was a boat ramp. But besides the river, there is also a nice field and an overpass with graffiti. Why didn’t y’all tell me? What other spots am I missing?

I love a good graffiti vibe, especially for senior portraits (and especially for a Skateboarder!) but I also have a slight fear of posting something inappropriate. I admittedly photoshopped out a little of the art in these. I once read an article that was full of examples of photographers who had posted photos and not noticed some interesting NSFW graffiti in the background. So you all have to let me know if I do that too.

Maternity Session in Franklin TN

We had to reschedule this maternity portrait session a few times because of the weather, but it turned out absolutely perfect in the end. It was a perfectly warm January day for this beautiful couple to celebrate the coming of their first baby. It is such a privilege to be a part of honoring this special time for new parents. I so enjoyed getting to know this couple during our time together.

I get a lot of questions about making a winter session work. I think winter photo sessions in Middle Tennessee are lovely. The key is flexibility. I am very flexible this time of year, so I leave it up to clients to decide what weather they can tolerate. Some kids are happy playing in the cold, and others are less tolerant. Portraits with everyone bundled up are adorable, especially if you put some thought into the coats, hats, and scarves.

But the good thing about Tennessee weather is that if the cold wasn’t what you imagined, we can probably just wait a few days and the weather will change dramatically. And you will end up with what we have here….a 70-degree day in January.

Is there anything more exciting than awaiting the arrival of a new baby? I am so happy for this beautiful couple, who are clearly so ready to meet their baby girl.

It was a freezing, cold session but you can’t tell from how beautiful and radiant mama looks. I want to make it clear that I never force clients to do a session when it’s as cold as it was on Friday. I keep my schedule pretty open this time of year so we can reschedule as needed. After all, it is Tennessee. If the weather doesn’t work, we can just wait a few days for a different season. But this session had already been rescheduled a few times. If we waited any longer, it may have turned from a maternity portrait session to a newborn session, so the clients wanted to brave the cold weather.

Mama-to-be looks stunning in this beautiful dress. This is a perfect choice for a maternity session or any portrait session for that matter.

Outdoor newborn portrait with big brother

This outdoor newborn/family session was a lesson in being flexible. These are wonderful repeat family portrait clients of mine. I was looking forward to meeting the newest addition to the family, a baby sister who is one month old. Mom wanted more of an outdoor family session than a traditional at-home newborn. Her original request was to have the photos taken at the Park at Harlinsdale Farms. We had not done a session for them there yet and she liked the location.

That sounded like a great idea until I realized that the session was scheduled for the same day as the Pilgrimage Festival. So I gave them the option of moving the session to another day, or keeping the date and moving to another location far far away from Harlinsdale and the crowds.

It turns out, a weekday morning session worked just great for the new family of four. Little ones are often happier in the morning and it worked for their schedules, so we changed the date.

But then Thursday morning I showed up at Harlinsdale about an hour early (because that’s me…your Enneagram 1 photographer). They were already setting up for Pilgrimage. Oops! I guess it should have occurred to me that they would need several days to set up for such a large festival. They wouldn’t let me in, and even if they had, there were giant white tents everywhere.

This is where my being obsessively early coming in handy. I was able to call the clients before they had left home, and we adapted. I gave a few options and they chose Winstead Hill Park. That worked out nicely because Winstead has plenty of shade, which is needed for a mid-morning photo session, and was somewhere they hadn’t done pictures before.

Isn’t that sweet baby girl just perfection? Big brother had a great time exploring a new park.

I loved shooting maternity photos for this beautiful couple who is awaiting the arrival of their first baby. That time in my own life seems both millions of years ago and just like yesterday all at the same time. Being pregnant is such a magical time that doesn’t really compare to anything else. How lucky I am to be able to experience a little of that magic through my clients.

Maternity photos are a great way for me to get the chance to know a couple before baby arrives. I’ll be photographing lifestyle newborn portraits for this sweet family soon and I cannot wait to meet their new little one.

It was such a gorgeous day for this family portrait session at Winstead Hill Park in Franklin, TN. I have been photographing this family since little brother was a baby, and this week he is turning three. I love being able to see my clients grow. It’s one of my favorite parts of being a family photographer.

In case you missed it, I am offering a Spring Mini Session date for Family Portraits because the Fall Mini Sessions were so much fun! Makayla and her family were visiting family from Michigan and wanted to have senior portraits made while they were in town. Makayla couldn’t decide if she preferred having her pictures taken in downtown Franklin or at the Park of Harlinsdale Farms, so we made both happen!

If you followed my blog for long, you probably recognize my friend Christy and her beautiful family in this family portrait session I shot yesterday. Christy had never had family portraits shot at the Park at Harlansdale Farms, and it was a perfect choice for this fall portrait session. The weather and the light were perfect and the girls had so much fun roaming around the farm.  Christy and I have been friends for years, so I’ve known Haley since she was a toddler, and Hannah & Emily since birth.  I actually photographed Emily being born.   They are some of the easiest children I ever photograph and we always have so much fun. 


Since Christy is often my guinea pig for trying new things, I was excited to have her be the first to try out a new service I’m offering to my clients to help them decide what to wear for their family portrait sessions.  I don’t know about you, but for me, deciding what to wear is probably the most stressful part of planning a portrait session.  I’ve never felt particularly good at it, even as the photographer.  I often have an idea in my mind what I want, but actually finding the pieces in all the correct colors and sizes to purchase never seems to be easy.  So I wanted to find a way to make that process easier on my portrait clients.  I’m happy to announce that every client will now have access to the Style & Select tool.  Style & Select is an interactive style guide and outfit coordinator on the web. 


When you book a portrait session with me, you will be sent a link to the Style & Select questionnaire and a password to use the service. You will then fill out the survey based upon the needs of your family.  The questionnaire will ask you the number of people being photographed, their ages, and your styling preferences along with what color scheme you would like to choose for your portrait session wardrobe.

The quick results page will show you photo-approved clothing pieces for each family member and you can view outfits side-by-side while favoriting items. You can play around with it until you have selected the perfect outfit combo! Click the email button to send yourself the selected items or shop for the clothes right away by clicking the shopping cart buttons. You don’t have to purchase the items recommended.  You can also use them as inspiration for shopping at your favorite store, on Amazon, or even in your own closet. 


Christy’s thoughts on using the Style & Select Tool


“The Style & Select tool was an easy way to get coordinated outfits in the style and colors I like. I was able to come up with several family outfit selections without spending a ton of time scrolling online or actually shopping! I love that it offered several price points and at stores I frequently  use (aka Amazon). I was even able to upload a couple of dresses we already had to make sure it all coordinated. And I am just thrilled with the results. Senior Guy Portraits at Grace Christian Academy

Last year, when I photographed beautiful McKenna, I wrote about my roots as the MOMS club photographer years ago. It’s crazy to me that I’m now starting to photograph senior portrait sessions for these kids who I was just at playdates with like last week. Ashton’s mom Alisha was also one of those moms I got to know back then, and I was so happy to be asked to shoot Ashton’s senior portrait session at his high school, Grace Christian Academy. As a senior photographer, it is especially rewarding to photograph kids who I’ve known all these years.

I had never been to Grace Christian Academy before, and was so very pleased with how pretty it was and perfect for Ashton’s senior photos. I love being able to capture pieces of his high school experience in the background of these photos. Where else would you want to photograph a football player but on the football field? And the school has a beautiful little pond and pretty wooded area. With the location, the light and the weather, it was the perfect location for senior photos.

Ashton lost one of his best friends, Grant, in July. He wanted a way to honor Grant’s memory in his photos. You can see Grant’s initials on the cross in the photo with the bible. 💔
