Senior Guy Session at McEwan Northside | Franklin TN Senior Photographer

Senior Guy Session at McEwan Northside Jenis Ice Cream

I absolutely love when seniors choose locations that actually mean something to them, and this session at McEwan Northside in Franklin was exactly that. When I learned this was where he and his friends hang out after school โ€“ especially at Jeni’s Ice Cream โ€“ I knew we’d capture something authentic.

I’d never shot at McEwan Northside before, but I knew it would work beautifully. I’m always up for considering a new location when clients suggest it, but I do sometimes worry if the lighting will be OK. But I knew this location had lots of taller buildings, creating open shade and opportunities for the sun to peek around corners or reflect off windows. I could already envision the variety of lighting we’d get to play with.

This place is a photographer’s playground โ€“ modern architecture with clean lines, vibrant murals that add instant personality to any shot, and thoughtful landscaping that softens all those urban edges. The only real challenge was trying to focus while the smell of North Italia’s kitchen kept wafting over. I’m definitely planning a dinner date there soon because those aromas were torture!

We centered several shots around Jeni’s since that’s where he spends the most time, and I couldn’t help but get excited at how perfectly his Tennessee orange coordinated with their branding. The murals were another unexpected bonus โ€“ that vibrant artwork gave us such dynamic backgrounds to work with.

There’s something about photographing someone in their element that just works. The modern vibe of McEwan Northside paired with the golden hour light created exactly the look we were going for. Between the architecture, the murals, and that perfect afternoon light, these images were so much fun to create.

I’m already excited to come back to McEwan Northside with future clients. It’s got everything I look for in an urban session spot, plus that bonus of actually meaning something to the local seniors who spend time there.

A Downtown Franklin Senior Session with Old Friends

Senior pics in Downtown Franklin

When this senior’s parents reached out about booking his senior portrait session, I immediately said yes โ€“ not just because I love photographing seniors, but because they are dear old friends and I was excited to see them.

His parents and I go way back to our Tennessee Tech days, where we were all Engineering majors trying to survive thermodynamics and calculus together. When my husband and I moved to Spring Hill after a few years in Detroit, they happened to live here too, and we picked up right where we left off. Those were some of the best times โ€“ regular Spades games at each other’s houses, lots of laughter, and just enjoying that phase of life when you’re building your careers and starting families.

I’ll never forget visiting them in the hospital when their son was born. I was very pregnant with my second daughter at the time, and the hospital staff actually thought I was there to check myself in! We all had a good laugh about that one. Life happened, as it does, and they eventually moved away from Spring Hill, and we haven’t been able to see them much.

What makes this even more special is that they were some of my very first clients when I started my photography business. They believed in me from the beginning and were such incredible supporters during those early days when I was still figuring everything out. So clearly, I was thrilled for the chance to see them again and photograph their son at this milestone.

Downtown Franklin was the perfect backdrop. We wandered around the area, found some great light between the buildings, and he totally nailed every shot. We also included a few family shots, which are some of my favorites from the session.

The whole thing honestly felt more like catching up with old friends than work, which made everything so much more relaxed and fun.

Ready to capture your senior’s personality and this important milestone? I’d love to photograph your family’s next chapter โ€“ reach out and let’s start planning a session that’s all about celebrating who they’ve become. Book now.

Colorful Senior Session at South 40 Farm | Nashville Senior Photographer

Colorful Senior Session at South 40 Farm in Franklin TN

When this senior booked her session at South 40 Farm, I wasn’t entirely sure if the flowers would still be in bloom this late in the season. But when we arrived, the cosmos were absolutely gorgeousโ€”one of those happy surprises that makes a session feel even more special.

And can we talk about her colorful hair? It was honestly perfect against every single backdrop we used. The vibrant teal popped beautifully against the pink and white flowers, created this amazing contrast with the rusty vintage cars, and looked incredible next to the weathered gas pump. Sometimes everything just clicks together exactly right, and this was definitely one of those sessions.

One thing I’ve been working on lately is pushing myself out of my comfort zone with lighting. For years, I avoided harsh light completelyโ€”I’d always look for soft, diffused light and plan sessions around that golden hour glow. But recently, I’ve been experimenting with more dramatic lighting, and I’m loving what it adds to senior sessions especially.

The photos by the camper are a perfect example. When we first walked over there, my instinct was to skip it because the light was pretty harsh. The same thing happened at the gas pumpโ€”the first time we shot there, the sun was still high and creating strong shadows. In the past, I would have waited or moved on entirely. But we went for it anyway, and those dramatic shots ended up being some of my absolute favorites from the session. We did come back to the gas pump later for some softer light as well, and both versions are beautiful in completely different ways.

I’m not saying harsh light is always the answerโ€”soft, diffused light is definitely easier to work with and best for most situations. But there’s something about those bold, high-contrast images that feels right for a senior session. They have this confident, editorial quality that really showcases personality.

If you’ve been thinking about booking senior photos, I have a few spots open for weekday sessions in November. The catch is that they need to start around 3:30 PM to finish before dark, which can be tricky for most people to get off work. But they’re perfect for seniors who can leave school a bit early. November has some of the best weather of the year, and because weekday sessions are harder for families, these spots tend to stay open longer. So if you’re a senior needing photosโ€”or know someone who isโ€”please share! These really are ideal times to shoot.

Stunning Senior Portraits at South 40 in Franklin, TN

Senior pics with Crystal Freemon Photography at South 40 Farm

I am absolutely in love with everything about this senior session at South 40. When this senior reached out wanting something with flowers and fields, she was originally interested in Harlinsdale. But with Pilgrimage festival prep shutting down the park, I suggested a few other options including South 40 โ€“ and I’m so glad she chose it because it turned out to be absolutely perfect.

The timing couldn’t have been better. The flowers were in full bloom, and were a perfect fit for what she was looking for. But honestly? I think I loved the tall weeds and grasses even more. There’s something about that natural, untamed look that just speaks to me, especially when the light hits them just right.

I’ll admit I got a little nervous when I spotted some sprinkles on my drive to the farm, and we could see storm clouds building in the distance. But sometimes the best sessions happen when you embrace a little uncertainty. As we were wrapping up, that approaching storm delivered the most incredible dramatic clouds and wind that made her hair dance perfectly against the moody sky.

Her outfit choices were spot-on. That blue dress looked absolutely stunning against the dramatic sky we lucked into, and I loved how the color popped against all the natural tones around us. Her second look with the vintage camper and old car was so perfectโ€“ sometimes those rustic elements just complete the whole vibe of a session.

What made this session even more special was getting to work with a family I’d photographed before. I had captured their family photos a few years ago during her older brother’s senior session, and there’s nothing quite like working with clients you genuinely enjoyed the first time around. We even snuck in a few family shots during this session, minus big brother who’s away at college.

If you’re considering South 40 for your senior session, just know there is a location fee of $75 per hour. I typically recommend booking two hours so I have time to scout the light before we start shooting, plus it’s a big farm and we need time to move between all the gorgeous spots. The flowers won’t always be in bloom like they were for us, but honestly, I love this location even when everything isn’t in bloom.

Ready to capture your senior year in a setting that feels authentically you? Let’s chat about creating something beautiful together โ€“ whether that’s at South 40 or finding the perfect location that speaks to your style. I’d love to help you tell your story. Book Now.

Seeing Through a Photographer’s Eye: A Downtown Franklin Senior Session

Senior Session in Downtown Franklin TN and Pinkerton Park

There’s a saying in photography that you should always “get it right in camera.” While I mostly agree with this philosophy, I’ve learned that sometimes the most beautiful shots come from seeing potential where others might not โ€“ and knowing what magic you can create later.

This senior guy’s session was the perfect example of how a photographer’s eye works differently. We started in downtown Franklin, and I’m sure my perspective looked a little unusual to anyone watching. While most people see the bustling street with too many cars, crowds of tourists, and trash cans scattered everywhere, I’m scanning for that perfect light hitting a brick wall or the way shadows fall across the architecture.

Yes, I could wait for the exact moment when no cars are driving by and no people are walking through my shot. But that’s just not practical when you’re trying to capture genuine expressions and keep the energy flowing. Instead, I strategically position myself so that any distracting elements fall in areas I know I can easily clean up later. I might be aiming for the dreamy way afternoon light pours over a building, fully aware that I’ll need to remove that delivery truck in the background during editing.

We had planned to end the session at the bridge at Pinkerton Park. His mom suggested we park on the opposite side of the bridge from Pinkerton Park. I’m so grateful she made that suggestion because it led me to discover this little patch of weeds that became absolutely perfect for our final shots. Now, I’ll be honest โ€“ to anyone else, this spot probably looked like nothing special. It was in a dingy gravel lot right next to some dumpsters. Not exactly scenic.

But that’s where the photographer’s eye comes in. I could see that the patch of weeds was just large enough to create a beautiful natural backdrop, and the light was filtering through in the most gorgeous way. Sometimes the most unexpected locations give you the most stunning results.

This is what I love about photography โ€“ constantly looking beyond the obvious to find those hidden gems. Every session teaches me to stay flexible with my plans while keeping my eyes open for something even better than what I originally envisioned.

Ready to create some senior portraits that capture your unique personality? I’d love to work with you to find those perfect moments and unexpected beautiful spots that tell your story. Contact me to book your session โ€“ I promise we’ll find the magic, even in the most unlikely places!

Downtown Columbia Senior Session | Class of 2025

Downtown Columbia TN Senior Pics - Senior girl browsing records at Variety Record Shop

With graduation parties filling up my calendar these next few weeks, I’ve been thinking about all the parents of this year’s seniors. Last year, I was in your place with my oldest graduating, and I’ll be there again next year with my youngest. It’s definitely an emotional time.

I miss my oldest, but seeing her grow and experience new adventures during her first year of college has been one of the great joys of my life. The next stage is different, but it has its own kind of awesome too.

I’ve enjoyed getting to know so many seniors from the Class of 2025 this year. Each one has their own unique personality and interests, which makes every session different.

This session downtown was particularly fun. When she mentioned wanting photos at Duck River Books and Variety Record Shop, I was immediately on board. Her mom contacted both businesses ahead of time for permission (which I always require when shooting in local businesses), and I’m glad they said yes.

I love how each location showed a different side of her personality. The bookstore had a quieter vibe while the record store brought out more energy. She brought along a favorite book and record to include in her portraits, which I loved. I’m not into elaborate props, but meaningful personal items that tell something about who someone is? Those always make for better photos.

After our indoor locations, we moved outside to capture some portraits at a few of my favorite downtown Columbia spots. The light was perfect, and she moved easily between poses and genuine smiles.

What I appreciated most was how her personality came through in every photo. Whether she was surrounded by books, looking through records, or standing on the downtown streets, she was just being herself.

If you have a senior heading into their final year of high school, I’d love to create a session that captures who they really are at this point in their lives.

Downtown Franklin Senior Session: Timing is Everything

Senior pics in Downtown Franklin, close up of Senior guy with chin in his hand.

Sometimes the best photo sessions happen because of a last-minute save! I was all set for a senior guy session in downtown Franklin this past weekend when my friend Chelsea casually mentioned the Franklin Main Street Festival. Cue the immediate panic! I had no idea this was happening, and trying to navigate senior portraits in the middle of festival crowds definitely wasn’t the plan.

The festival was scheduled to end at 6 PM with our session starting at 6:30, but I was still nervous about the lingering crowds, vendors packing up, and general chaos. Downtown Franklin was really what this senior wanted for his location, and I was determined to make it work for him.

Luckily, he was super flexible (something I always appreciate in clients!) and easily moved the session to Monday instead. And what a perfect decision that turned out to be – we had gorgeous weather, empty-ish streets, and and a perfect night for pictures.

This session reminded me that sometimes the backup plan turns out even better than the original. Monday evening in downtown Franklin offered us quieter streets and more flexibility to use different spots without navigating around festival cleanup. We even managed to grab a few shots by the theater marquee, which would have been impossible during the festival.

If you’re a senior (or parent of a senior) looking for portraits that capture this important milestone with a natural, relaxed approach, I’d love to chat about creating images that truly represent who you are. Your session doesn’t have to be downtown – we can find the perfect location that tells your unique story!

Smith Park Senior Session: Thoughts on Photography and Privacy

Senior Pics at Marcelle Vivretee Smith Park - Senior Guy in Cap & Gown on tree lined path

What a relief when the rain finally stopped just in time for our senior session at Marcelle Vivrette Smith Park! The ground was still wet, but we made it work with a step stool for sitting poses.

This park is perfect for spring sessions with its tree-lined path, small pond, and stone springhouse. We got so many different looks without having to trek all over the place.

During our time together, we talked about how I handle privacy on social media. I wanted to share my approach since it might not be obvious to everyone.

First and foremost, I completely respect when clients prefer not to have their photos shared at all. While I do appreciate the opportunity to showcase my work (it’s how future clients find me!), your comfort is always the priority. I actually include a question about sharing on socials in my client questionnaire. But especially with teens, I try to remember to ask them directly too, not just their parents. Their comfort with being featured on my business page matters just as much to me, and they possibly have different preferences than their parents expect.

For the clients who do allow me to share their images, I’ve developed some personal guidelines that I follow consistently. The big one is that I don’t tag clients or use their names in my posts. This isn’t because I’m not proud of the amazing people I photograph โ€“ quite the opposite! It’s simply my way of giving clients control over their online presence. You’re absolutely welcome to tag yourself, share the images, and tell the world about your experience if you choose to, but I wanted that decision to remain firmly in your hands.

It’s especially important to me when photographing young people that their full names aren’t directly connected to their images in a way that makes them easily searchable. I want my posts to focus on the artistry of the photography and the genuine moments we captured, rather than creating a digital footprint someone might not want down the road.

I’m not sure if this is common practice among photographers, but it’s the approach that feels right to me. It’s just one small way I try to balance sharing my work with respecting the privacy of the amazing people who trust me to capture their memories.

If you’re interested in booking your own spring session at this beautiful location (or any other spot around Spring Hill), I’d love to hear from you!

Spontaneous Change Leads to Perfect Senior Session

Senior girl at matgic hour at the Park at Harlinsdale Farms

Sometimes the most beautiful moments in photography come from unexpected changes. This was certainly the case for this recent senior session, which took an unplanned but ultimately perfect turn.

We had originally scheduled to meet at Battle Ground Academy, but when we arrived, the campus was busy with sporting events. The crowds made intimate portraits difficult, so we relocated to Harlinsdale Farms.

This change turned out to be ideal. The weather was gorgeous, with beautiful afternoon light filtering through the historic farm buildings and across the open fields. What made this location even more meaningful was that I had photographed her family here years ago. Returning to capture her senior portraits created a nice full-circle moment.

I loved how she incorporated her college choice of Tulane into her wardrobe. These thoughtful details make senior portraits more meaningful โ€“ they’re not just about the end of high school, but celebrating the journey ahead.

Editing these images brought me so much joy. Her infectious laugh and genuine smile lit up every frame. Working with a senior whose personality shines through so naturally made my job easy and enjoyable.

This session reminded me that sometimes a backup plan turns out to be exactly where you were meant to be all along.

Senior Photography at The Factory at Franklin: Tips for Parents Attending the Session

Senior portrait session at the Factory at Franklin by Crystal Freemon Photography - senoir guy with arms crossed in green sweatshirt with string of lights in background.

I’m absolutely loving The Factory at Franklin for senior sessions lately! There’s something about the rustic brick walls, industrial elements, and gorgeous natural light that creates such a perfect backdrop for showcasing senior personalities. (Just a quick note: The Factory does charge a $50 photography fee, but I promise it’s worth every penny for the variety of backdrops we get to use!)

One question I get asked fairly often is whether parents should come along to their senior’s portrait session. I think the answer is really personal and depends on your specific senior. While most of my seniors bring someoneโ€”usually momโ€”to their session, some teens might feel more relaxed without an audience. It’s worth having a conversation about what makes your senior most comfortable.

For this particular senior session, both the senior and his mom were absolute naturals, creating such a relaxed, fun atmosphere that made capturing these images a joy. I just love the way everything turned out! I said this during the session, but I’ll repeat it here for all of you: blue-eyed people should almost always include at least one blue outfit choice at their sessions. That’s just facts! The blue really makes those eyes pop in photos.

We were a bit worried about the weather turning on usโ€”it looked like rain might interrupt our plansโ€”but the sun came out at the perfect moment, blessing us with a gorgeous sky for those outdoor shots.

Parent’s Guide: The Dos and Don’ts of Attending Your Senior’s Portrait Session

If you’re a parent who will be accompanying your senior to their session, here are a few helpful tips to make the experience amazing for everyone:

The Dos:

  • Do help with small, easily fixed details. Feel free to point out minor wardrobe adjustments like an unbuttoned button, a collar that needs straightening, or the outline of a phone in a pocket.
  • Do hold their phone, keys, and extra items. This practical help is genuinely appreciated and prevents awkward pocket bulges in photos.
  • Do maintain a relaxed atmosphere. One of the most valuable things you can do is help keep the mood lightโ€”chat about whatever, tell stories, or just be a calm, encouraging presence.
  • Do trust the process. Just like I tell parents of toddlers, I’ll take tons of photos, and plenty of them will capture perfect, genuine expressions.

The Don’ts:

  • Don’t criticize their expressions. The most common concern I hear from parents is about “fake smiles.” I completely understand wanting natural photos of your teen, but pointing out forced expressions never makes it betterโ€”it just makes them more self-conscious.
  • Don’t tell them to smile. I know parents really want those smiling photos, but many teens actually prefer more serious expressions. I love both and will work to capture a variety, so we don’t need them smiling in EVERY pose.
  • Don’t hover too closely. Give your senior and me some space to work together and build rapport.
  • Don’t worry if they seem uncomfortable at first. Teens are often most awkward at the beginning of the session, and that’s completely normal! As we chat, move around, and get into the flow, we’ll find many 1/500ths of a second of natural, authentic expressions.

Remember, the goal is to create images that reflect who your senior truly is at this milestone moment. Sometimes that means letting them take the lead on their expressions and poses, even if they’re different from what you might choose.

Looking at these images from our Factory session, I’m reminded of why I love photographing high school seniors so much. There’s something magical about documenting this transitionโ€”capturing who they are right now, while hinting at who they’re becoming.

Senior Session at Fall Creek Falls

Fall Creek Falls Senior Guy Portrait Session with Crystal Freemon Photography

This session was a special oneโ€”this senior is the son of one of my best friends from college, and we met up at Fall Creek Falls for his photos, just like we did for his older sisterโ€™s session. I love this location and wish it were closer because it has so much variety to work with.

We spent more time on this session than I usually do, just roaming around and hanging out, which made for a really fun, relaxed shoot. We started earlier in the day than I normally would, so I got to play around with harsher light more than usual. While I still love the soft glow of golden hour, it was fun experimenting outside my comfort zone. The biggest challenge was avoiding squinting in the bright sun, but honestly, the sunglasses he brought made it workโ€”and they looked really cool, too.

There were moments in this session where he had such a โ€˜70s vibe, which I loved. Whether it was the lighting, the setting, or just his overall look, it really worked, and Iโ€™m so happy with how these turned out.

Fall Creek Falls is always a dream location, and it was great getting to explore it again for this session. If only it were a little closer!

Why Downtown Columbia Never Gets Old for Senior Sessions

Senior girl in beautiful flowing pink dress in front of an old white building in Downtown Columbia TN

Iโ€™ve lost count of how many times Iโ€™ve photographed senior sessions in Downtown Columbia, but no matter how many times I return, it never feels the same twice. Thereโ€™s something special about this little downtownโ€”its mix of historic charm, worn brick, and urban textures creates the perfect canvas for any seniorโ€™s personality.

This session was a perfect example of that. As I was shooting, I realized I had placed this senior in some of the same spots Iโ€™ve used beforeโ€”leaning against the same old brick, walking past the same weathered doors, standing in the same golden light. But the vibe? Completely different.

Thatโ€™s what I love about senior photography. The location stays the same, but the energy, the personality, and the story are unique every time. This senior brought her own style, her own confidence, and her own presence, making familiar backdrops feel brand new. One moment, she looked effortlessly elegant in a soft pink dress, the next, she exuded bold confidence in a sleek black outfit. The contrast of styles against Downtown Columbiaโ€™s timeless textures made for such a stunning variety of images.

One of my favorite surprises from this session happened near the green table. Iโ€™ve shot in that exact spot so many times before, but it had never really stood out to me. Then I noticed her fabulous pink shoes and suddenly knewโ€”the colors would be fantastic together. That pop of pink against the bright green brought a whole new life to the space, turning it into one of my favorite shots of the day.

This session also had a special layer of nostalgia for me. Iโ€™ve known this seniorโ€™s mom since my momsโ€™ club days, and she has always been such a kind supporter of my work. As I was preparing this blog post, I realized that I featured a photo of this seniorโ€”when she was just a little girl hugging her brotherโ€”in my 10-year anniversary video. Where does the time go? Itโ€™s such a surreal feeling to look back at that sweet moment from years ago and now see her all grown up, stepping into this exciting new stage of life.

Itโ€™s proof that a great location isnโ€™t just about the buildings or the sceneryโ€”itโ€™s about how a senior makes it their own.

Are you a senior looking for the perfect spot to showcase your personality? Downtown Columbia is always one of my top recommendations. Whether you want something soft and dreamy, bold and confident, or a mix of both, itโ€™s the kind of place that adapts to YOU.

And for a fun throw-back, here is the photo I mentioned from my Anniversary Slideshow, taken in 2016.

A Special Senior Session in Chattanooga

Senior Girl Portrait Session in Downtown Chattanooga

There are certain sessions that feel extra special, and this was definitely one of them. This beautiful senior isn’t just any clientโ€”she’s the daughter of one of my oldest and dearest friends from college. Sheโ€™s like a niece to me, and I canโ€™t believe sheโ€™s already getting ready to head off to college herself! It feels like just yesterday we were all young and figuring out life, and now sheโ€™s about to embark on her own incredible journey.

When it came time to plan her senior session, we wanted to capture her in a place that holds meaning for her. Since she lives in Chattanooga, I made the trip down to photograph her in some of her favorite spots. We originally scheduled the session last month, but as luck would have it, it ended up raining on us and we had to try again for another date. This past weekend, we finally made it happen! Though it was absolutely freezing and the wind had a mind of its own, we at least dodged the rain. And honestly? I wouldnโ€™t have changed a thingโ€”the overcast skies gave us the most gorgeous, soft lighting that made every shot feel magical.

We explored some truly stunning locations, from scenic riverside spots to the iconic pedestrian bridge. If you look closely, you can even see the Tennessee Aquarium in the background of some of the images! One of my absolute favorite stops was a vibrant alley covered in chalk art, which added such a fun and dynamic feel to the session. It was the perfect mix of edgy and whimsical.

I am so honored to have captured this milestone for someone so special to me. I have no doubt that sheโ€™s going to do amazing things in college and beyond.

Enjoy this little sneak peek from her session! I canโ€™t wait to see all the adventures that await her. ๐Ÿ’•

A Stunning Senior Session at The Factory at Franklin

Senior guy portrait session at the Factory at Franklin

There are sessions that just stick with you, and this senior session at The Factory at Franklin is definitely one of them. Everything about itโ€”the colors, the textures, and the settingโ€”made it one of my all-time favorites.

The Factory is such a dream location for photography. The combination of industrial textures, moody lighting, and stunning architectural details creates a perfect backdrop for unique, creative portraits. Yes, they do charge a $50 photo permit fee, but trust me, itโ€™s absolutely worth it. The versatility of this space gives sessions an elevated, artistic feel that you just canโ€™t get anywhere else.

We lucked out with the weather for this shoot. Itโ€™s been raining constantly, but on this particular day, we had a cold but clear afternoonโ€”perfect for capturing some incredible images. My senior handled the chilly weather like a pro and brought a great energy to the session.

The industrial setting complemented his look perfectly, giving the photos a mix of grit and warmth. His personal style added a unique touch to the images, and he was a natural in front of the camera.

I always want my seniors to feel like themselves in their photos, and this session did exactly that. His personality and style came through beautifully, and Iโ€™m really happy with how these images turned out.

If youโ€™re looking for a senior session location that offers something a little differentโ€”something with a mix of grit and beauty, history and modern edgeโ€”I highly recommend The Factory. And if youโ€™re up for braving the cold, it can make for some seriously epic portraits!

Senior Session at the Factory at Franklin

When it comes to capturing senior portraits, finding the right location is key. I was thrilled to return to The Factory at Franklin for this session after not having shot there in a while. Iโ€™m happy to report that the new owners still allow photography with a paid permit, which is great news because The Factory remains one of my favorite spots for its endless variety of stunning backdrops and unique charm.

We began the session at Studio TN, to celebrate this senior’s love of the theater. The theater provided a meaningful and personal setting that beautifully reflected his passion for performing. The dramatic lighting and intimate atmosphere made it a fantastic place to start, and it set the tone for a creative and fun shoot.

Next, we headed to the colorful and eclectic shops within The Factory. A big thank-you to Luna Record Shop and CR-71 for letting us take photos in their stores. These spaces were a perfect fit for this seniorโ€™s personality. Whether posing among the vinyl records or exploring the treasures at CR-71, these indoor locations added such a unique and personalized touch to the session.

We wrapped up the session with The Factoryโ€™s gorgeous outdoor spaces, which I have always loved. The industrial brick walls, large glass panels, and beautiful architectural details provided a classic and timeless backdrop. I think the overcast day added a depth and contrast to the photos that is just beautiful.

What makes The Factory at Franklin so special is its versatility. From its creative indoor locations to the stunning outdoor settings, itโ€™s a photographerโ€™s dream. Every corner offers something unique, and itโ€™s the kind of location that helps bring a seniorโ€™s personality to life in every shot.

This session was a wonderful mix of creativity, fun, and meaningful moments. Huge thanks again to Studio TN, Luna Record Shop, and CR-71 for being part of this incredible experience!

Finding the Magic in Simplicity: Santa Minis

Every year, Santa Minis remind me of the beauty of simplicity and connection. Writing this blog post is my way of reminding myself to stay true to my style and vision as a photographer.

Iโ€™ve never been someone who gravitates toward elaborate props or highly stylized backgrounds. Give me sunshine and a field of weeds, and Iโ€™m in my element. For me, the focus of any session is always the peopleโ€”their personalities, connections, and stories.

Now, to clarify: when I say “props,” I mean objects that are solely decorative and don’t hold personal meaning to the people in the photo. Items like cherished toys, musical instruments, or “lovies” are differentโ€”they’re part of the story and help tell who my subjects are.

Iโ€™ve embraced this minimalist approach for most of the year. I admire the creative sets and adorable props other photographers use, but theyโ€™re just not my style. That said, thereโ€™s something about Christmas that makes me second-guess myself when it comes to Santa Minis. I start to wonder, Should I add more Christmasy elements? Do I need props to make these sessions special?

This year, I decided to keep it simple with just a single wrapped gift and a lantern next to Santa. That plan lasted for about half of the first session. I quickly found myself moving them out of the wayโ€”they felt like distractions when I zoomed in on my subjects. I realized (again!) that simplicity is what feels most authentic to me.

By keeping the focus on the kids and their interactions with Santa, Iโ€™m able to capture moments that feel timeless and genuine. My favorite shots are often the unscripted ones: Santa walking hand-in-hand with a little one, or the quiet moments of a child deep in conversation with him. These photos pull at my heartstrings every time.

And, as always, Nashville Santa did not disappointโ€”heโ€™s truly the real deal.

One of the things I love most about these sessions is the tradition. Every single family who booked this year was a repeat client. Iโ€™ve watched these kids grow over the years, and itโ€™s so special to see how their relationships with Santa evolve. Weโ€™ve gone from Santa reading The Night Before Christmas to little ones, to older kids reading the book to Santa.

This year also brought new additionsโ€”babies born to families whoโ€™ve attended for years. While the first six sessions were miraculously tear-free, the littlest ones in the last two sessions brought some (adorable) tears. When that happens, I try to capture them from a distance, with Santa in the background. Itโ€™s not about forcing smiles; itโ€™s about honoring the moment for what it is.

What Iโ€™ve learned is this: I donโ€™t need elaborate sets or staged perfection to create meaningful photos. My goal is to document the magic of childhood and family in a way that feels real and unposed. And giving kids room to explore and roam during these sessions only adds to that magic.

For me, Santa Minis mark the start of the holiday season, and this year was no exception. I feel so grateful to be a part of this tradition for so many families, and I canโ€™t wait to see what next year brings.

A Perfect Senior Session in Downtown Columbia

I am absolutely in love with this senior session! I loved her style and her clothing choices were just fantastic for the location. Her pup was such a trooper and so well-behavedโ€”itโ€™s always a treat to include pets in senior photos, and he was an especially cooperative dog for the entire photo session.

Downtown Columbia is one of my favorite spots to shoot, and this session reminded me why. I just love all the different buildings and textures. I know many of my seniors love Downtown Franklin, and it’s always a great choice, but I personally prefer the slightly edgier look of Columbia.

She wanted photos with her car and had liked the ones I recently took at Columbia Motor Alley. These were probably my favorites of the session, particularly the ones of her just standing in front of the wall of the Motor Alley with the orange light in the background.

Her mom booked a last-minute spot in what I think is the best month of the year for photos. Since she was able to take a weekday slot, we had a prime session during the gorgeous fall light. Weekday sessions after the time change are often a hidden gem for seniorsโ€”especially those who get out early for online classes or study hall. The earlier sunset can be tricky for some, but for those who can make it work, weekday sessions offer beautiful golden-hour light and a little more availability during the busy fall season.

If youโ€™re looking to book a photo session before the end of the year, there are still a few spots left. I’m also offering $50 off sessions in January and February if that works better for you. A Unique Senior Session at Hidden Seed Plant Co. and Fischer Park

This senior session was such a treat! When this senior mentioned her love for Hidden Seed Plant Co. and asked if we could do part of her session there, I thought it was a great idea. Hidden Seed is this cozy little shop tucked away near Duplex and Main Street, right behind Groove Life. The owner was kind enough to let us take some photos in the shop, which made for a beautiful and unique backdrop.

I actually have a plant from Hidden Seed myselfโ€”a gift from friends for my birthday in August. Iโ€™m notorious for having a brown thumb, but three months later, itโ€™s still alive and thriving, so Iโ€™m convinced this shop is a little bit magical. If you havenโ€™t been there, you really should check it out!

For the second half of the session, we headed over to Fischer Park. Itโ€™s a place I know well, since itโ€™s close to home, and we often walk our dog Mars there. While Fischer Park is mostly known for the playground, splash pad, and paved walking track, thereโ€™s a lovely little weeded area along the trail and even a hidden path down to the creek. Iโ€™d been wanting to try it as a photo spot for a while.

The path down to the creek is pretty steepโ€”I usually slide down it on my bumโ€”so Iโ€™d been hesitant to take families there. But I knew this senior was up for an adventure. She came prepared with sneakers to help her navigate the slope, and once we got down there, the setting was perfect. Iโ€™m so glad she was game because the photos turned out beautifully.

If youโ€™re local to Spring Hill, I canโ€™t recommend checking out these two spots enough. Hidden Seed is a fantastic little business to support, and Fischer Park is perfect for a walk or some fresh air. It was a pleasure to incorporate both places into this session, and Iโ€™m thrilled with how everything turned out!

Winter sessions can be a beautiful and unique way to capture your senior year! Iโ€™m offering a special discount for January and February bookings (use coupon code ‘WINTER” when booking), so if youโ€™re ready to create something unforgettable, letโ€™s chat!

Fall Mini-Sessions at Sarah Benson Park ๐Ÿ

Once a year, I offer fall mini-sessions, and this past weekend at Sarah Benson Park. Even though I generally prefer the relaxed pace of a full sessionโ€”getting to know each family in-depth and allowing everyone time to feel comfortable in front of the cameraโ€”mini-sessions offer a unique opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces in a short, fun burst of energy.

I always try to book these mini-sessions on a late October weekend, when the leaves are usually at their peak for fall color. This year, I was lucky enough to have all three mini-session slots filled by families I already know and love working with, which is always my hope for mini-sessions.

The first family I photographed was one I got to know earlier this year while capturing senior photos for their oldest. Seeing the whole family together was such a joy, and their teens were perfect for a mini-sessionโ€”they’re at that age where they understand the flow of a photoshoot, which helps keep things moving smoothly.

The second session was with a family I’ve been photographing for years. Watching their girls grow up has been such a joy, and I can hardly believe how big theyโ€™re getting. Mini-sessions are a great way for families like this to update their family photos regularly without committing to a full session each year. And oh my goodness, the giggles. I just love these girls.

The final session was with one of my dearest friends from college and her family. Despite the limited time of a mini-session, we found a few moments for her little ones to run, play, and capture some natural, candid shots. Those small moments make even a quick session feel meaningful.

Senior Session at South 40 Farm

Iโ€™m thrilled with how this senior session turned out at South 40 Farm. The whole vibe of this shoot came together perfectly, from the location to the outfits. We started with a gorgeous teal blue dress, which looked incredible against the fall colors around the farm. Later, the senior switched into jeans and a lacy topโ€”simple, but so fitting for the natural, cozy feel of the location.

One thing I really appreciate about this session is how much thought the client put into choosing a photographer with the right style. Too often, people pick a photographer because they were nearby, had an opening, or came recommended, without really looking at their work. But this seniorโ€™s mom did the research, and it made all the difference. She found a style that matched her daughterโ€™s vision and was willing to make the drive from Hendersonville to work with me.

When picking a photographer, my best advice is to start by finding a portfolio you genuinely love. Customer service and reliability matter, but none of it is worth it if the style doesnโ€™t align with what youโ€™re looking for. Iโ€™m grateful to have worked with clients who understand that, and it makes sessions like this even more rewarding.
