Senior Guy Session in Downtown Columbia

Senior Guy Session in Downtown Columbia

I really love photographing senior portrait sessions in downtown Columbia. There are so many fun buildings and textures, and it’s generally less crowded than downtown Franklin. It was thankfully much warmer than my maternity photo session on Friday. It was a beautiful afternoon getting to know Ethan and his mom.

While we were walking around taking photos, I was saying that I really need to explore more of the fun restaurants in Columbia. What are some of your favorites?

This was a really fun senior photo session in Downtown Franklin. I wasn’t sure if we were going to get rained out. But by afternoon, the clouds cleared out and the weather was pretty near perfect.

I so enjoyed getting to know Kate and her mom during this downtown Columbia Senior Portrait Session on Sunday. I feel like her mom and I should have known each other already as it seems we have been on the edge of each other’s circles for years.

Downtown Columbia has become one of my favorite spots for Senior Pictures. There are just so many fun walls and textures, which is what Kate was looking for in her photos. Downtown Franklin is another fun spot for a downtown look but is often more crowded.

If you need me, I’ll be editing. It’s the busy season. ❤

Senior Portraits at Pinkerton Park

Seniors Portraits at Pinkerton Park in Franklin TN

I think my favorite pictures from this Senior Session at Pinkerton Park in Franklin are the ones in the playground. I’ll admit that it’s totally because Liam’s mom told me that he used to play in that very same playground as a boy. Well, you know I’m a sap for a sentimental photo location. As a mama myself, the photo of the senior guy with his childhood playground in the background gets me in the feels.

Fun Teen Photo Session in Downtown Columbia

Teen Photo Session in Downtown Columbia

OK I know I’ve chosen too many preview pictures for this fun teen photo session in Downtown Columbia. Narrowing down my selection is never something I excel at and it’s even worse when it’s for the child of one of my best friends who I’ve known for most of their life.

I’ve found that parents typically have a big gap in photos of their kids when it comes to the teen years. We take lots of photos of our little ones, but it gets so much harder as they age. For one thing, teens can be very reluctant to let their parents take everyday pictures of them. But here is a secret: getting dressed up and having a professional photographer take photos of you and your friends is much more enticing than letting mom and dad do it.

(Full disclosure: My own teens usually do NOT want me to take their photos, but I’ve never had any trouble with other people’s teens. Go figure.)

I am so pleased with how these turned out. Michelle suggested the session as a way to celebrate Sam’s 15th birthday. Sam was given the freedom to decide what to wear and what friends to include in the session. I love photographing friendships at any age and loved watching the group interact with each other. We really had a great time roaming around Downtown Columbia. I hope Sam loves the photos as much as I do.

Behind-the-Scenes: Senior Pics in Downtown Columbia

Behind the Scenes Senior Pictures in Downtown Columbia TN

It’s always a special treat to photograph Senior Pictures for a family I’ve known forever. So I was really excited when my old friend Ellen booked me for her son Will’s Senior Portrait Session. She wasn’t sure where they wanted to take the pictures but said they loved textures and cool walls. After some discussion, we settled on Downtown Columbia, which is one of my favorites that few people ever pick.

While I was shooting, I didn’t realize that Ellen was taking a few photos of me. She shared them with me, so I thought it might be fun to show you a behind-the-scenes view of a portrait session by sharing her pics side by side with the ones I was taking when she captured me.

I discovered the backside of this strip of buildings the last time I shot in Columbia & wanted to shoot there again. The sky was pretty cool so I got some close-up shots and some wide-angle views. This is not an angle I would use for a grown person, but these young kids can handle it.
I love this big textured wall in Downtown Columbia but wish there weren’t parking spaces right in front of it. It’s a really cool spot to capture a lot of different angles.
I once took photos of a guitar player in front of Variety Record Shop. Since Will plays the Trumpet, I thought it would be fun to photograph him there too.
I just loved how the brown door, trim, and bricks worked with what Will was wearing, and his red hair. The colors were fantastic. Also, you’ll notice I did not include any black & white images in this blog preview. I just couldn’t do it. The colors were too perfect.
This photo, in particular, did a great job of showing how the beauty of a session location really is in the eye of the photographer. This was literally some back alley construction site with garbage all around. But the texture of the stack of bricks, the stone and brick walls, and the ivy growing in the background got my attention. And I thought the colors worked great.
I’m a little obsessed with chasing the sun.
Here we were joking about all the positions photographers find themselves in and how I’m often literally rolling around in the mud. Anything for the shot. It’s a lot more tiring with little kids I’m trying to chase and then diving to the ground. At least the teens follow directions.

I made Will play for me while taking these because authenticity is key. It felt like we were on Bourbon Street. I got a sneak peek of the theme for the Summit High School Marching Band show for this year. I’m not going to give it away, but I am STOKED. I can’t wait to see them perform.

And then here are a few more I don’t have behind-the-scenes shots of, because I am horrible at narrowing down my favorites from a session. Especially one I really enjoyed, like this one.

Thanks so much to Ellen for sharing these pictures with me so I could share a behind-the-scenes perspective of a photo session.

Senior Portraits at Natchez Trace Bridge

Franklin High School Senior Portrait Session at Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge

🎓 When this Franklin High School senior contacted me about booking her Senior Portraits, she asked if we could do them at the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge. I had never taken photos at Natchez Trace before, and I’m not sure why because it was a fantastic idea, and a perfect fit for Lauren.

The one thing I wasn’t sure about with shooting at the Bridge, was if it would offer enough variety for a full session. That wasn’t a problem because there were lots of different natural features like tall grass, honeysuckle bushes (one of my favorite scents!), and trees to offer variety in addition to the bridge itself. Also, Lauren was adventurous enough to walk through the weeds with me to get to the base of the bridge itself for some fun shots.

Lauren actually graduated from Franklin High on Friday and then we took these senior photos on Sunday. Seniors book their photo sessions with me at all times throughout their last year of high school. But I thought it was especially fun to get photos on graduation weekend. It felt like I was a part of the celebration. I so enjoyed getting to know Lauren. She is such a fun, adventurous young woman, and I hope I’ve captured her beautiful spirit in these photos.

Best of luck to Lauren, Hadley and all of the class of 2021 as they are of to new adventures!

Senior Pictures in Downtown Columbia

🎓 I can’t believe I’m already shooting Hadley’s senior pictures. I became friends with Hadley’s mom, Shannon, back in my years in the Spring Hill MOMS Club when Hadley was just a little girl. I later went on to serve on the Elementary School PTO with Shannon. All of those things seem very recent, so it doesn’t seem feasible that Hadley will graduate from Summit High School this weekend and will be off to Sewanee this fall. I can’t wait to hear about her adventures there and where life will take her.

Hadley wasn’t sure where she wanted her Senior Pictures taken, so I suggested Downtown Columbia. I think Downtown Columbia is often overlooked as a photo location, in favor of Franklin. But both towns have a ton of great brickwork and architecture that I love for Senior Photos. The advantage of Columbia is that it’s often less crowded.

To Hadley & all of the Class of 2021 – congratulations to you all. May your week be filled with wonderful celebrations and memories that will last a lifetime.

Family & Senior Combo Portrait Session in Spring Hill

Family & Senior Session in Spring Hill TN

Sunday was the perfect spring day in Spring Hill for this combination Family & Senior portrait session. I loved getting to know this wonderful sports-loving family. I always encourage people to include items that are special in their portrait session. For little ones, that sometimes means a special lovey, stuffed animal, or blanket. But this advice works for teens and older kids too. Anything that both says something about the person or family being photographed and also helps clients to be more relaxed at a session is a win. For this session (and another recent session), a football was that item. I’ve also had clients include books and instruments in a session.

If you had to choose an item that was special to you, and represents what would you choose?

Samuel’s Senior Pictures in Spring Hill TN

Senior Pictures in Spring Hill TN

I dare you to look at these senior pictures without smiling.

I had the best time photographing these senior pictures in Spring Hill. We had so much fun laughing and dancing and playing with the puppy. Sweet Halo was so chill for our session. I joked that I needed to be able to rent her to use for other photo sessions. I always welcome dogs to my sessions (just make sure I know ahead of time so our location is dog friendly), but Halo was probably the easiest dog I’ve photographed.

Spending time with Samuel and his mom was just an absolute joy. His smile is contagious. It was a blessing to be around him, and then I found myself smiling again when I was editing the pictures.

Joshua’s Columbia Academy Senior Portraits

Columbia Academy Senior Portraits

I’m so pleased with how this Columbia Academy Senior Portrait Session turned out, despite questionable weather earlier in the day. We almost had to postpone the photo session due to bad weather. Thankfully the rain ended well before our scheduled time.

But the weather led Joshua’s mom to ask me how the cloudy weather might affect the pictures. I thought I’d share my answer here for others who had wondered the same. I actually really enjoy photo sessions on overcast days. The clouds provide a diffused light that is very nice for portraits. It actually makes it a little easier. Normally during the beginning of a session when the sun is still high in the sky, I have to look for shaded areas to take photos to avoid the harsh light. On cloudy days, that’s not an issue.

The one downfall to shooting on an overcast day is that there is not much variety in lighting. There is no hazy backlight for example. But we can still add variety in other ways. In Joshua’ soccer photo below, I used my flash to light his face while still capturing the dramatic sky in the background. Then, as the sun went down, we used the headlamps on his car for some interesting lighting.

I also want to mention that we had some discussion of where to have this session, and I’m so glad we decided to do the photos at Columbia Academy. First of all, the campus is beautiful. Also, I love having a location that means something to the people being photographed. I’ve been organizing some old photos of my own, and find myself looking at the environment in the photos as much as the people. Often little things in the background that we didn’t even notice at the time, evoke memories when viewed years later.

Congrats to Joshua and all of the class of 2021! I know they have so many exciting adventures ahead of them. 🎓

Winter Family Photos in Franklin TN | Franklin Family Photographer

Nashville Family Photographer winter photo session in Franklin TN

Happy New Year! This outdoor winter family photo session in Franklin was a perfect way to end 2020. Thanks so much to everyone who has trusted me to be your family photographer for 2020. It truly is an honor to be trusted to capture your family memories. 2020 has been such a crazy, trying year for everyone, but when I look back at all the photos I’ve taken this year, what stands out is just all the love.

This photo session is a perfect example of why I always say that winter is a great time for family photos. We had beautiful mild weather for this session, but I love the cold ones too. In 2020 style, I have gotten to know Mona virtually this year, and it was so great to finally meet her and her beautiful family in real life.

I hope 2021 brings you all many beautiful family moments, lots of love and tons of slow news days.

Wynn’s Senior Portraits – In Memory of Grant

Senior Portrait Session in Memory of Grant Solomon

Back in September, an old friend of mine hired me to do Senior Portraits for her son Ashton, who attends Grace Christian Academy. Ashton had recently lost one of his best friends, Grant, and wanted to honor his memory in the photos.

Grant’s mom, Angie, saw some of those pictures of Ashton. She contacted me about shooting similar senior portraits for Grant’s best friend, Wynn. And she wanted to include Grant’s little sister as well. Wynn and Grant had been best friends for nine years and were almost like twin brothers. Wynn’s senior portrait session was a way to help both families honor Grant’s memory and process their grief.

I wish that I had been able to meet Grant, and photograph his senior portraits. I feel like I was able to get to know a little about who he was by being around his friends and family. He was a passionate athlete, a loving brother and son, and an amazing friend.

My hope is that these photos help others to see the impact he made on his family and friends.

Sweet 16 Family Portrait Session in Murfreesboro

Family Portrait Session Sweet 16 in Murfreesboro

It was an absolutely gorgeous afternoon for this Sweet 16 / family photo session at McFadden’s Farm at Stone Rivers National Battlefield in Murfreesboro. I think that as a society, we do a great job documenting family photos when our kids are young, and then again for their senior year. But we often miss getting photos of that in-between time that is also so important. So I am always so excited when someone wants to do a photo session for their teen or tween before their senior year.

Sarah wanted to document Mason’s Sweet sixteen with a photo session, and I just think that is a wonderful idea.

This was the second time I have shot at Stone River Battlefield in Murfreesboro. My friend Jennie had recommended it last year for her family portrait session. Sarah had hired me after seeing Jennie’s pictures and also lives in Murfreesboro. I’m really loving this location and may start suggesting it, even for my Spring Hill and Franklin clients. It’s really not that far away and is such a gorgeous spot for family photos.

Senior Photos at Harlinsdale Farms in Franklin TN

Senior Photos at the Park at Harlinsdale Farms in Franklin TN

I’m pretty sure that I say this every year, but the best time to get Fall portraits done if you want Autumn color is the first or second week in November. This year’s most perfect Fall session was definitely snagged by Kendall for her Senior photos.

I was afraid that we might have to postpone this session for rain. But the rain cleared out in time for the portrait session and everything was just perfect. I love the lighting that you can find after the rain, and the overcast skies really make the fall colors pop. I’m in love with this senior portrait session. I hope Kendall and her family love them as much as I do.

2020 Summit High School Marching Band

Summit High School Marching Band

It was an honor to photograph Hadley & her friends in the Summit High School Spartan Band. We had actually scheduled a photoshoot for the Homecoming football game, which was canceled because of COVID. Thankfully, being district champs allowed us another chance at a home game and last night it was able to continue.

This was definitely different from when I photographed the band several years ago. For one thing, they all sit down in the end zone instead of in the stands so they can spread out a little more. And then of course there are masks. But really the only thing I would have wanted to change if I could was that we had no sunlight at all. If we’d been able to shoot our original date, the game would have started with a little light. Friday night lights are strong enough to make due. I would just have liked the variety of having a little sun.

One thing I struggled with was trying to get photos of all the kids, while still trying to maintain distance as much as I could. The kids who sat on the outside were definitely easier to photograph, and Hadley wasn’t one of them, but I think I was able to get plenty of fun photos.

Congrats to Summit for a big win! I believe that means there is another home game to come.

Beautiful Blended Family Portrait Session | Spring Hill TN

I had so much fun photographing this gorgeous family at their fall family portrait session in Spring Hill, Tennessee. I’ve known Jen for years and years, but this is the first time I’d gotten to meet her entire beautiful family. With seven kids, there were a lot of people to photograph, but that was made easier with the fact that almost everyone was old enough to easily take direction. And little Sawyer was never ever without a big sibling to love on him or keep him entertained.

I loved observing the relationships between the children and the friendships they clearly share. And how perfect are the colors they chose to wear for the portrat session? I especially love the pops of yellow. They all look so great with the colorful fall leaves in the background.

Country Cove Farms Family Session

Family Portrait Session att Country Cove Farms in Murfreesboro TN

This is the time in the year when I start giving up on words, keeping blog posts short and sweet, because who has time for writing when there is all this shooting and editing to do? But I do want to say how much I loved hanging out with this adorable family during their family photo session at Country Cove Farms in Murfreesboro. It was so clear how much love there is between them and I felt blessed to be able to capture it in photos.

OK, now back to editing. Happy Fall, yall!

Downtown Franklin Senior Portrait Session

Downtown Senior Girl at Harlinsdale Farms in Franklin TN

Makayla and her family were visiting family from Michigan and wanted to have senior portraits made while they were in town. Makayla couldn’t decide if she preferred having her pictures taken in downtown Franklin or at the Park of Harlinsdale Farms, so we made both happen!
